While we’re still struggling with regular TV signals on our mobile phone, in Japan, it looks like companies such as Panasonic are refining their technology for watching HD quality TV shows on mobile phones. Panasonic has developed a mobile phone LSI based on their Uniphier digital equipment platform already used by Panasonic on their digital TVs. Panasonic’s new LSI is capable of functions such as graphics rendering, 1seg reception, and audio/visual content playback. Panasonic’s UniPhier 4MBB+ also reduces power consumption in mobile phones by about 25% and its communication function can support W-CDMA/HSDPA as well as GSM/GPRS standards. The LSI also supports 2D/3D graphics standards.
Panasonic will start shipping samples of their UniPhier around the end of July 2008.
